Wheeling is a village in both Cook and Lake Counties, but predominantly located in Cook, about 23 miles northwest of downtown Chicago. The village was named after Wheeling, West Virginia. In the year 1850, Wheeling created a township government. Being a popular destination with numerous restaurants and saloons, residents were seeing a rise in disturbances on the streets. They fought for incorporation so law enforcement could maintain peace and order in the village. Today, Wheeling is home to "restaurant row" along Milwaukee Avenue, and Chevy Chase Country Club, formerly known as Bon Air, Windsor, and the Columbian Country Club. The population grew to 37,648 in the 2010 census.
