The Village of Schaumburg was incorporated in 1956, after settlers arrived in the area as early as 1835. Schaumburg expanded in the 1960s and changed the community dramatically. Commercial, industrial and retail growth continued throughout the 1980s, 1990s and into the present day. Woodfield Mall has a fine collection of department stores, specialty shops and restaurants. Schaumburg is served by three elementary school districts, one high school district, a community college, and two universities. Schaumburg Park District operates three community centers, three fitness centers, three outdoor pools, an indoor aquatic center, two golf courses, and the Spring Valley Nature Center, which is 135 acres of fields, forests, marshes and streams.
